Abstract

The Fowl Geese Reduction Yield Management (GRYM) Reaper aims to be the solution to deterring geese. GRYM is a fixed-wing RC aircraft with a built-in spinning-disk mechanism that launches pellets through a barrel beneath the fuselage. The final prototype is lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to use. The aircraft structure showcases the engineering design and complexity constructed using wood and other lightweight materials. These elements ensure a technically sound final product, allowing for the application of actual aircraft and engineering design.

On Rutgers University-New Brunswick Busch Campus, there are no methods to control the geese. Students are prevented from attending class because large flocks block paths and roads. Geese defecation creates foul odor and slippery conditions. Additionally, their aggressive honking disrupts students' learning during the lecture. On a larger scale, wild animals in general destroy crops and spread unwanted diseases to agriculture and livestock, which may disrupt the supply of agricultural goods, e.g., avian flu. No active mechanism has been proposed to prevent wild animal encroachment; therefore, the concept of an RC aircraft is a dynamic solution to deter animals from destroying crops.

Deterrence methods such as scarecrows have been around for over 3000 years, with the first ones appearing in Ancient Egypt along the Nile River. However, they, along with other passive methods, are ineffective as geese have grown accustomed to them. Additionally, electric fences are not an option as they pose a hazard to other wildlife and people.

Currently, there are no commercial RC aircraft that deter geese or any other pests. RC aircraft have existed since the 1930s. By combining proven technology with an innovative deployment system, the Fowl GRYM Reaper is the solution to geese infestation and provides active deterrence against wild animal encroachment on property.
